To get your brand mentioned by ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler reach your site, then get your company named on the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites when buyers ask about your category: listicles, Reddit threads, LinkedIn posts, review sites and comparison pages. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlate with ChatGPT visibility far more strongly than backlinks or Domain Rating. Run the same buyer questions every month to see whether it is working.

Most founders start with their own website. That is the smallest lever. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features each answer by searching the web, reading a set of pages, and summarising what those pages say. If the pages they read do not name you, you are not in the answer, however good your homepage is.

This guide covers how each engine picks sources (from the engines' own documentation), what the published studies say, and a seven-step method you can run with a spreadsheet every month. If you want a quick read on where you stand first, run the free AI visibility check, which tests whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI name your company.

#Why this matters for a B2B founder now

Your buyers already ask AI before they ask you. G2 surveyed 1,076 B2B software buyers and decision-makers in March 2026:

  • 51% of B2B software buyers start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google, up from 29% the year before (G2, 15 Apr 2026).
  • 69% of those buyers chose a different vendor than they planned because it appeared in a chatbot's recommendation (G2, 15 Apr 2026).
  • 85% of buyers think more highly of a vendor when AI includes it in an answer (G2, 15 Apr 2026).

And when Google shows an AI answer, fewer people click through to anything:

  • 8% of Google visits with an AI summary led to a click on a traditional result, against 15% of visits without one, across 68,879 searches by 900 US adults (Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025).
  • 1% of visits to pages with an AI summary included a click on a link inside the summary (Pew Research Center, 22 Jul 2025).
  • 35% higher organic click-through rate for brands cited in an AI Overview than for brands not cited (0.70% against 0.52%), across 3,119 search terms in Q3 2025. Seer reports this as a correlation (Seer Interactive, 4 Nov 2025).
  • 61% drop in organic click-through rate on queries with an AI Overview, from 1.76% in June 2024 to 0.61% in September 2025 (Seer Interactive, 4 Nov 2025).

The practical meaning: if a buyer reads an AI answer and your name is not in it, they may never reach your site at all, and the brands that are cited keep more of the clicks that remain. Being named inside the answer is now part of being on the shortlist. More buyer data is in the B2B buyers and AI research statistics, and click data is in AI Overviews click-through rate.

#How does ChatGPT pick its sources?

Here is what OpenAI says on its own pages, and nothing more.

ChatGPT searches when it decides a question needs current information. OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page says ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information." It "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" and sends them to search providers. So one buyer question becomes several searches you never see.

It ranks results, and placement is not guaranteed. The same page says ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed." There is no paid placement and no form to submit.

Your site must let OAI-SearchBot in. OpenAI runs separate crawlers, and each one is controlled separately in robots.txt:

Crawler What OpenAI says it does What blocking it means
OAI-SearchBot Surfaces websites in ChatGPT search results "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers"
GPTBot Collects content that may be used to train foundation models Signals your content should not be used for training. It does not control search.
ChatGPT-User Visits a page when a user asks ChatGPT to, in real time Because a user starts the visit, OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply

You can block GPTBot (training) and still allow OAI-SearchBot (search). OpenAI says the two settings are independent.

Any public site can appear. OpenAI's publishers FAQ states: "Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search." It also says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, which is how you see ChatGPT visits in Google Analytics.

#Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

OpenAI's launch post for ChatGPT search (31 October 2024) says it uses "third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners." The current help page says "ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers," and among the provider privacy policies it links are Microsoft's privacy statement and Shopify's privacy policy. OpenAI's pages do not name Bing as the index ChatGPT searches. I could not find an official OpenAI or Microsoft page in this research that says, in those words, that ChatGPT search runs on Bing results.

What the data shows is that ranking on either engine is not the same as being cited:

  • 8.1% of ChatGPT's citations matched Bing's top 10 results for the same prompt, for both in-text citations and reference links, across 15,000 long-tail queries (Ahrefs, 11 Aug 2025).
  • 8.0% of ChatGPT's in-text citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the original prompt (Ahrefs, 11 Aug 2025).
  • 28.6% of Perplexity's citations ranked in Google's top 10, the highest of the assistants tested (Ahrefs, 11 Aug 2025).

Ahrefs explains the gap with query fan-out: the assistant searches several variations of the question and merges results, so the cited pages often rank for a different query than the one the user typed.

So is Bing indexing worth your time? Yes, as cheap insurance. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools takes minutes, Microsoft is one of the providers OpenAI links, and Bing's own AI Performance report (public preview since 10 February 2026) shows citations of your pages in Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and "a limited set of partner integrations." It does not list ChatGPT, so do not read it as a ChatGPT report.

#How do Perplexity and Google AI Overviews choose sources?

Perplexity runs its own crawler. Its documentation says PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" and is "not used to crawl content for AI foundation models." Perplexity recommends allowing it in robots.txt so your site appears in results, and says changes "may take up to 24 hours" to reflect. A second agent, Perplexity-User, fetches pages when a user asks a question and "generally ignores robots.txt rules."

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Google Search. Google's Search Central page on AI features says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Both features may use "query fan-out," which Google describes as "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources." Google also says you do not need "new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup," and that there is "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."

Because AI Overviews draw on the Google index, organic rankings matter more there than in ChatGPT:

  • 54.5% of AI Overview citations came from pages that also rank organically in September 2025, up from 32.3% in May 2024 (BrightEdge, 18 Sep 2025).
  • 71.0% of AI Overview citations in B2B tech overlapped with organic rankings in September 2025 (BrightEdge, 18 Sep 2025).

#What the studies say about which sites get cited

Each engine leans on different third-party sites. That tells you where to show up.

  • 47.9% of ChatGPT's top 10 cited sources were Wikipedia, in Profound's analysis of 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025 (Profound, 5 Jun 2025).
  • 46.7% of Perplexity's top 10 cited sources were Reddit (Profound, 5 Jun 2025).
  • 21.0% of Google AI Overviews' top 10 cited sources were Reddit, and 18.8% were YouTube (Profound, 5 Jun 2025).
  • 6.7% of ChatGPT's top 10 cited sources were G2, the review site, close to Forbes at 6.8% (Profound, 5 Jun 2025).
  • Nearly 15% of Google AI Mode responses cited LinkedIn, across more than 230,000 prompts tracked weekly from July to October 2025 (Semrush, 10 Nov 2025).
  • Close to 60% of ChatGPT responses cited Reddit in early August 2025, falling to around 10% by mid-September (Semrush, 10 Nov 2025).

Source mixes swing hard within weeks. Do not bet everything on one platform.

What predicts whether a brand gets mentioned at all? Ahrefs measured 75,000 brands:

  • 0.664 correlation between branded web mentions and ChatGPT brand visibility, against 0.266 for Domain Rating (Ahrefs, 12 Dec 2025).
  • 0.709 correlation between branded web mentions and Google AI Mode visibility, and 0.656 for AI Overviews (Ahrefs, 12 Dec 2025).
  • About 0.737 correlation between YouTube mentions and AI visibility, the strongest factor Ahrefs tested (Ahrefs, 12 Dec 2025).

Ahrefs notes these are correlations, not proof of cause. Still, the direction is consistent across studies: being talked about on other people's pages matters more than link counts. A fuller breakdown sits in AI citation sources and the AI search statistics 2026 roundup.

#The 7-step method: how to get mentioned by ChatGPT

This is the sequence I would give any B2B founder. Steps 1 and 2 are research. Steps 3 to 6 are the work. Step 7 keeps you honest.

Step 1: Run a baseline of buyer questions across engines

Write 15 to 25 questions a real buyer types before they talk to sales. Pull them from sales call notes, lost-deal reasons and your support inbox, not from a keyword tool. Mix four types:

  1. Category: "best [category] tools for [segment]"
  2. Problem: "how do I [job your product does] without [pain]"
  3. Comparison: "[competitor] alternatives", "[you] vs [competitor]"
  4. Brand: "what is [your company]", "is [your company] good for [use case]"

Run every question in ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Use a logged-out or fresh session where you can, because OpenAI says ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search query. Record results in a sheet like this:

Date Engine Buyer question Are we named? (Y/N) Position in answer Competitors named Cited URLs (copy all) Is our site cited? Notes
2026-10-16 ChatGPT best [category] tools for seed-stage SaaS N none A, B, C g2.com/..., reddit.com/r/..., vendorblog.com/best-... N listicle ranks 3 tools, we are missing
2026-10-16 Perplexity [competitor] alternatives Y 4th of 5 A, D reddit.com/r/..., linkedin.com/pulse/... N named from a Reddit thread
2026-10-16 AI Mode how to [job] without [pain] N none B linkedin.com/posts/..., smallagency.com/... N LinkedIn post cited first

The "Cited URLs" column is the one that matters most. Paste every source link the engine shows.

Step 2: Find which pages get cited

Sort the cited URLs from Step 1 and count them. You will see three groups:

  • Pages that name competitors and not you. These are your targets.
  • Pages that name you already. Protect and refresh these.
  • Pages from your own site. Usually few. Note which ones they are, because those formats work.

Then classify each cited page by type: listicle, Reddit thread, LinkedIn post or article, review site, YouTube video, comparison page, Wikipedia, news. This tells you where your effort goes. If eight of your twelve category questions cite the same three "best tools" articles and one Reddit thread, that is your whole plan for the next quarter.

Step 3: Earn a place on those pages

This is where the mentions come from. Work through the target list one page type at a time.

Listicles and "best tools" articles. Email the author. Give them what makes inclusion easy: a one-line description of who you are for, a real differentiator, pricing or a demo login, and a customer they can verify. Many of these pages are updated on a schedule. Ask when the next update is.

Reddit threads. Do not drop links. Answer the question in the thread as a founder who knows the problem, say who you are, and mention your product only when it fits. Reddit's communities remove promotion fast. The founders who get named are the ones whose replies get upvoted for being useful. The data is in Reddit AI citation statistics.

LinkedIn posts and articles. Google AI Mode cited LinkedIn in nearly 15% of responses in Semrush's tracking. Publish posts that answer your buyers' questions directly, under your name and your company's. One clear point of view per post, with a real example, gets quoted more often than a general update.

Review sites. G2 was 6.7% of ChatGPT's top 10 cited sources in Profound's data. Get your listing complete, ask happy customers for reviews in the categories buyers actually search, and keep your product description identical to the one on your site.

YouTube. Given Ahrefs' YouTube correlation, a short demo or a founder explainer answering one buyer question is worth recording, even if it gets few views.

Step 4: Publish pages AI can quote

Your own site still matters as a supporting source, and for AI Overviews it matters more because of the organic overlap. Build these page types:

  • Direct-answer pages. Put the answer in the first two or three sentences, then the detail. AI engines lift short, complete statements.
  • Original data. A survey of your customers, benchmarks from your product, a pricing index. Other writers cite numbers they cannot get elsewhere, and that creates the third-party mentions from Step 3.
  • Comparison pages. "[You] vs [competitor]" and "[competitor] alternatives." Be fair. A page that admits where the competitor is better reads as a source, not an ad.
  • Pricing pages. Buyers ask chatbots what tools cost. If your price is hidden, the answer will use someone else's guess.
  • FAQ sections written from real sales questions, with short answers.

Google's guidance applies to all of these: keep "important content available in textual form," not locked inside images or PDFs.

Step 5: Make your entity consistent everywhere

AI engines assemble what they know about you from many pages. If your LinkedIn page calls you "AI workflow platform," Crunchbase says "sales automation," and your homepage says "revenue OS," the engine has three weak signals instead of one strong one.

Pick one company name spelling and one 20 to 30 word description. Use it word for word on:

  • Your homepage and About page
  • LinkedIn company page and founder profiles
  • Crunchbase, G2 and Capterra listings
  • Wikidata, if your company meets its notability rules (do not create an entry that will be deleted)
  • Organization structured data on your homepage

On that last point, Google says Organization markup helps it "disambiguate your organization in search results," and the sameAs property should list "the URL of a page on another website with additional information about your organization," such as your LinkedIn page and review profiles. Google recommends placing it on your home page. Make sure the markup matches the visible text, which Google's AI features page also asks for.

Step 6: Check technical access

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check four things:

  1. OAI-SearchBot is allowed. If it is blocked, OpenAI says you will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  2. PerplexityBot is allowed. Perplexity recommends allowing it to appear in results.
  3. Googlebot is allowed. Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google-Extended is a separate token for training and grounding in other Google systems.
  4. Your CDN or firewall is not blocking these bots. Google lists "any CDN or hosting infrastructure" in its own advice. Bot-protection settings on some hosting platforms block AI crawlers by default, so check your dashboard, not only the file.

A minimal setup that allows search crawlers and blocks training looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Whether to block GPTBot is a business choice. It does not affect ChatGPT search, per OpenAI's crawler docs. Then verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and submit your sitemap to both.

Step 7: Measure every month

Re-run the exact same question set from Step 1 on the same day each month. Track three numbers per engine:

  • Mention rate: questions where you are named, out of total questions
  • Citation rate: questions where your own site is cited
  • Share of answer: how often you appear compared with each named competitor

Also watch referral traffic tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com in your analytics, and Bing's AI Performance report for Copilot citations. Keep the question set fixed for at least a quarter so the trend means something.

#Mistakes that keep founders out of AI answers

Chasing "AI SEO hacks." Hidden prompts, special AI text files, and keyword-stuffed FAQ blocks. Google states plainly that no new machine-readable files or special markup are needed for its AI features, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed. There is no shortcut that replaces being named on credible pages.

Blocking crawlers by accident. A security plugin or CDN rule that blocks "AI bots" can remove you from ChatGPT search and Perplexity at once. Founders often block GPTBot on principle and catch OAI-SearchBot in the same rule.

Homepage-only content. A homepage tells AI what you sell. It rarely answers a buyer's question, so it is rarely cited. The pages that get cited answer something specific.

Measuring once. Semrush recorded ChatGPT's Reddit citations falling from close to 60% of responses in early August 2025 to around 10% by mid-September. A single check tells you about one day.

Writing only about yourself. Buyers ask about problems and categories more than brands. If all your content is product news, you will only show up for your own name.

#Realistic timelines

I will not give you a number of weeks, because no study I found measures how long it takes a B2B brand to start being mentioned, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Here is what is documented, and what depends on you.

Documented:

  • Robots.txt changes reach ChatGPT search in about 24 hours, per OpenAI.
  • Perplexity says robots.txt changes may take up to 24 hours.
  • Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed, even when a page meets every requirement.

Depends on others:

  • A listicle includes you only when its author next updates it.
  • A Reddit thread names you only if your reply earns upvotes and stays up.
  • A review site counts only once you have reviews in the right category.
  • New pages must be crawled and indexed before any engine can use them.

What to expect in practice: technical fixes show up first. Mentions on third-party pages arrive unevenly, page by page. Because engines refresh sources at different speeds, you may appear in Perplexity before ChatGPT, or in AI Mode before AI Overviews. That is why Step 7 is monthly and the question set stays fixed.

#How Shruti does this for clients

On 15 October 2026 I checked 13 buyer queries about LinkedIn ghostwriting in Google AI Mode. The cited sources were LinkedIn posts and articles, LinkedIn profiles, small agency pages and listicles. Company homepages were rarely the source. That matches the method above: the answer was built from third-party pages and founder content, not from the sites of the companies being recommended.

So the work I do for founders starts where the citations are. I had written 3,600+ LinkedIn posts for SaaS and AI founders by mid-2023, from seed stage to $10M ARR, and I ghostwrite on Reddit, where client posts reached 6.2M views and 47.7K upvotes in the six months to October 2026. Those are the two surfaces that kept appearing in my AI Mode check, and they are the pages a founder can publish on directly without waiting for an editor.

If you want to see your own starting point, run the free AI visibility check. It shows whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI name your company for the questions your buyers ask.

#Methodology

Claims about how the engines work come only from their own documentation: OpenAI's help pages, publishers FAQ, crawler overview and launch post, Google Search Central, Perplexity's crawler docs and Bing's Webmaster blog. Data comes from published studies by Profound, Ahrefs, Semrush, BrightEdge, Seer Interactive, Pew Research Center and G2. Each figure was read on its original page and checked on 16 October 2026. Where no official source confirmed a common claim, such as ChatGPT search running on Bing, the article says so.

Quick questions

How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, because OpenAI says sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Then get your brand onto the pages ChatGPT already cites for your buyers' questions. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with ChatGPT visibility at 0.664, far above Domain Rating at 0.266.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

OpenAI says ChatGPT search partners with other search providers and lists the Microsoft privacy statement among the provider policies on its help page, but it does not name Bing as its index. Ahrefs found only 8.1% of ChatGPT citations matched Bing's top 10 for the same prompt, so ranking on either engine does not guarantee a citation.

How do Google AI Overviews choose sources?

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no extra requirements or special markup. AI Overviews and AI Mode use query fan-out, running related searches across subtopics. BrightEdge found 54.5% of AI Overview citations came from pages that also rank organically in September 2025, and 71.0% in B2B tech.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed. What you can control is crawler access and whether your brand appears on the pages ChatGPT retrieves.

How long does it take to get mentioned by ChatGPT?

Access changes are fast: OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours. Earning mentions on third-party pages takes longer and no published study gives a reliable timeline, so measure the same buyer questions every month.

Do AI chatbots actually influence B2B purchases?

Yes. G2's survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers in March 2026 found 51% start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google, and 69% chose a different vendor than planned because a chatbot recommended it.
