Reddit is one of the five most visible domains in US Google search and one of the sources AI assistants cite most often. Google and OpenAI both pay for structured access to its data. For a B2B founder, Reddit threads are now part of how buyers research a category, whether or not you ever post there.
#1. Reddit went from 68th to a top-5 Google domain in a year
In July 2023, reddit.com ranked 68th among domains in Google's US organic results by Sistrix's visibility index. By July 2024 it ranked 5th, and its index score had risen from 95.1 to 1,370, according to an Amsive analysis of Sistrix data published in July 2024. Over a similar period, Semrush data cited by Adweek showed Reddit's monthly visitors rising from 132 million in August 2023 to 346 million in April 2024.
The climb has stopped. Sistrix's Reddit domain report, with data updated on 28 July 2026, lists reddit.com as the 4th most visible domain in US Google Search and 5th in the UK. It also says visibility peaked in October 2025 and labels the current trend "strong negative." Even after the decline, only three domains outrank it in the US.
#2. Google and OpenAI pay for Reddit's data
In February 2024, Reuters reported that Google would pay about $60 million a year for access to Reddit content, as TheWrap summarized on 22 February 2024. Neither company disclosed a price. The deal gives Google use of Reddit's Data API for its products and for training AI models.
On 16 May 2024, OpenAI announced its own partnership. OpenAI said it would access Reddit's Data API to "better understand and showcase Reddit content, especially on recent topics," and bring Reddit content into ChatGPT. OpenAI also became a Reddit advertising partner.
Both of the companies whose AI products answer the most buyer questions now have a paid pipe into Reddit.
#3. AI assistants cite Reddit heavily, but the share swings
Profound analyzed 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025. Among each platform's top 10 cited sources, Reddit accounted for 46.7% of citations on Perplexity, 21.0% on Google AI Overviews and 11.3% on ChatGPT. Measured against all citations, the figures were 6.6%, 2.2% and 1.8%.
Ahrefs Brand Radar data covering more than 3 million US queries, last updated on 2 September 2026, ranks Reddit 2nd among the 50 domains most cited by Google AI Overviews. Reddit holds an 18.5% share of those top-50 citations, across 830,641 distinct Reddit pages.
The numbers move quickly. A Semrush study of more than 230,000 prompts found Reddit appeared in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August 2025, then fell to around 10% by mid-September.
What gets cited is the useful part. A second Semrush study of 248,000 Reddit URLs cited by AI tools found that 80% of those posts had fewer than 20 upvotes. Median post length was about 80 words. Q&A threads made up more than half of citations. AI systems are pulling ordinary, specific answers, not only viral threads.
#4. 130.3 million daily users, most of them logged out
Reddit's Q2 2026 earnings release, for the quarter ended 30 June 2026, reported 130.3 million daily active uniques, up 18% year over year, and 514.6 million weekly active uniques, up 24%. Logged-out daily users reached 77.7 million, up 27%. Logged-in daily users grew 7% to 52.6 million. International daily users rose 28% to 77.1 million. Revenue was $805 million, up 61%.
| Metric | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| US Google visibility rank | 4th | Sistrix, data of 28 Jul 2026 |
| Share of AI Overviews top-50 citations | 18.5% (rank 2) | Ahrefs, updated 2 Sep 2026 |
| Share of Perplexity top-10 citations | 46.7% | Profound, Aug 2024 to Jun 2025 |
| Daily active uniques | 130.3M (+18%) | Reddit Q2 2026 |
| Logged-out daily uniques | 77.7M (+27%) | Reddit Q2 2026 |
#5. The rules: authentic posting and gated data access
Reddit's Rule 2 tells users to "post authentic content into communities where you have a personal interest" and bans content manipulation, "including spamming, vote manipulation, ban evasion, or subscriber fraud," according to the Reddit Content Policy text archived by the US Supreme Court in 2024. Each subreddit adds its own rules on top, and many restrict links.
Access to Reddit's data is also tighter. On 11 November 2025, Reddit introduced the Responsible Builder Policy and ended self-service sign-up for its Data API. New OAuth tokens now require approval. Developers are directed to Reddit's Devvit platform, researchers to a request form and moderators to a contact form. Existing access continues for those operating within policy. Any new tool that posts or monitors Reddit through the API needs Reddit's sign-off first.
#What this means for a founder
- Answer questions before you start threads. Find Q&A threads in the subreddits your buyers read and write specific, short answers from your own experience. Semrush's data shows low-upvote, roughly 80-word answers get cited by AI tools.
- Post under your own name and disclose your role. Rule 2 rewards authentic participation in communities you care about. If your product is relevant, say you built it, and check the subreddit's link rules before mentioning it.
- Do not automate or game it. Buying upvotes, running extra accounts and returning after a ban all fall under content manipulation. Unapproved API bots are now off the table too.
